Baby! First Trimester

Yes, we're pregnant!!:) Praise the Lord! For a little while there I worried (needlessly) that I might have trouble getting pregnant!

So here's my little pregnancy diary...more for myself than anything...:)

MONTH 1
  • Aug 10 - Hmm...Period is 10 days late! But been having cramps...it's happened before, late period, cramps...then period...oh well... But man, my breasts hurt!!
  • Aug 11 - 520am. First morning urine...guess better now than any other time! Since I so happened to have a home pregnancy kit... 530am. I'm still staring at the + sign...now does that mean I'm pregnant? Really not a good idea to test so early in the morning when you're still asleep! *check instructions again* "Honey! Can you come here a minute?" Bleary-eyed Jon asked what was wrong. I showed him the results. He looked blank. "I think I'm pregnant!" He was really pleased and said all the right things, but I don't think he really believed the test...I told you it was too early in the morning! But it sunk in later when I told him it's really rare to have a false positive pregnancy test...
  • So that would make me about 6 weeks pregnant! (I know now when you see 6 weeks or 36 weeks in reports or books, it's from your LMP not time of conception. It's been a long while since OB, okay?)
  • Aug 13 - Happily smsed my sisters and told them the good news...they were really excited!:) Boarded the plane for Msia. Had cramps off and on...made me really worried. Shouldn't have worn jeans! Who wears jeans on 24hr flights anyway??

MONTH 2

  • Kept expecting and waiting for the nausea and vomiting to come... After all...isn't that the badge of honour for mums-to-be? Being sick like a dog? Well, I had none of the good stuff...:) except very rare nausea in the middle of the night. So much so I wondered if my pregnancy was normal...whether I had 'enough' of the right hormones?!
  • Really, baby has been really good to me...Only sign or symptom of pregnancy that I can say I had was fatigue, and even then, not as bad as I imagined! Maybe it was just jetlag! It was more a brain-fuzziness...and it's still going on now...
  • Jon keeps telling me to exercise, but if there's a time for me to play the pregnancy card, it's now...
  • Been really good with my folic acid (2mg/day, thanks Mona!) although I should have started way before conceiving, and have been eating cereal daily, so vitamins are in check, and so are my bowels.
  • I got myself a baby book Dr. Miriam Stoppard's New Pregnancy and Birth book. Pretty good!
  • Rachel got me a Baby names book. I complained that 2500+ names is not enough to choose from...;)
  • Cramps are lessening...I start feeling more confident about the pregnancy. I tell mum about it, and she's really pleased..."No wonder you're so tired". Then I start telling my aunts and relatives and close friends about it...:) I think it's one of the nicest things about being pregnant...telling people who love you the good news...they're always so happy for you!
  • Sept 4 - Time to see an OB. Been putting it off long enough...I just want to check in with someone, you know? Dr. I turned out to be a really nice guy. Talks little, but smiles alot. I expected blood tests only but was thrilled to have an ultrasound!
First picture of our baby! 8.5 wks
  • When I first saw the image, I just didn't know what to feel, such a surge of emotions! Maybe I hadn't believed I was pregnant until then! It's looks like a proper 8 week-old embryo, it's in the right place and everything! Could even see the little heart beating away! Had to stop myself from bawling... A really amazing experience! I proudly showed the picture to my family and anyone who might care to look...looks like a soybean, but looked perfect to me!:)

MONTH 3

  • Rachel says you can tell when someone's pregnant cos they keep touching their tummy...:) I hadn't realized I did that. Still not showing at all early into the 3rd month. Weight has also been stable! Been quite good with not eating too much junk, under Captain R's orders. But I have also really wanted to fill my appetite with good nutritious stuff for baby...and by then, usually have no more room for junk...
  • Lots of diet restrictions from my aunty as well...no cold drinks, not too much 'cold fruits' aka watermelon especially (my favourite!:(), um..that's about it, I think. Hmm...come to think of it, it's not been that bad after all, but in Msia, to not be able to drink anything cold...:(
  • Had 2 facials so far... I was hoping since I started out with such bad complexion that it would clear when I got pregnant. It didn't, but it didn't get worse either, so I'm glad.
  • One thing I would dearly love to have, now that I'm starting to get backaches, either from baby or from sleeping too much, is a massage...an hour-long massage. But I'm told no one would do it for me, not when I'm pregnant. They won't even give me a foot massage! Well, when Jon comes, I will still need a shoulder massage...
  • Crying for no reason, also another positive symptom of pregnancy for me...or maybe I've been like that all along...
  • Sept 15 - Happy 30th Birthday to me!!! Had a lovely time with mum and family. Rachel treated me to a mani/pedi...:) And bought me 2 nice mum and fashion-appropriate tops. She really is trying to make me a yummy mummy...hehe! Eunice is straining her eyes crocheting me a baby blankie...:) All I really want is a healthy normal baby...
  • Went out with friends for dinner. Got lectured on still wearing jeans (but I can still button and it's not tight!), for drinking juice with ice, and for still wearing heels (only 1 inch!). Felt really guilty...:( But it's true, I'm starting to not be able to lie on my tummy on the hard floor anymore...baby protests by kicking a bit...;)
  • Sept 25 - Ob visit 2. This time I brought Rachel and Eunice along...I really wanted them to see the ultrasound. No proteinuria. BP normal.

Baby at 12 weeks

  • Yay! Another ultrasound! My...how baby has grown in 3 short weeks! Now we can clearly see a nice head, the spine, and even its arms and legs actively moving!:) Looked so cute I burst out laughing! Dr. I had to smile at me.:) Nuchal translucency was well within the low risk limit for Down's. Praise the Lord!
  • Old wives tale (I read from What to Expect when You're Pregnant, from SuLin and SuYin) says that if the baby's heartrate is <140bpm,> 140 bpm its a girl. My baby's HR was 164!:) We'll see!
  • Sometimes I forget I'm pregnant, although not so much anymore since the ultrasounds and me starting to show a little bump! That's how good baby has been to me! I thank God for His protection and grace. And look forward to the next 6 months! I'm happily putting away my jeans and heels for now...:)

Happy 60th Papa!

My dearest Papa,

Happy BIG Birthday!:) How are you? Is
heaven all you've pictured it to be? Better? Is God and all His angels holding a special first-bday-in-heaven bash for you?

I miss you so much... Almost all the time I wonder how come the world still goes on now that you're gone...how come I can still go on? My life is really less special without you... You made everything matter, and now I struggle with what does...

Your life with us on earth was short...but so meaningful...so inspiring... I can still hear your voice... I can still feel your love... And I think that's what sustains me...

I am so proud of you, Pa... You lived your life to the fullest...You were so brave till the end... I'm so glad I am your daughter, that God sent me such a loving father to raise me into the woman I've become. I hope I make you proud.

You are always in my heart... I love you with all my heart...*Big hug* See you again one fine day...

Have a special day!:)

Your loving daughter,
Debbie

4-Step-Anything...

Inspired by the Next Food Network Star, Melissa D'Arabia...I made the 4-step chicken recipe that she shared, with whatever I had in my kitchen (which isn't much...)

Forgot to take a picture...

Ingredients
- 2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, sliced in half crossways (butterflied, cut all the way through, on in smaller pieces) or pork chop/fish/etc
- 2 teaspoon ground thyme
- Salt and pepper
- 4 tablespoons olive/vege oil
- 1/4 cup all-purpose/corn flour
- 1 red/yellow/green onion/garlic, thinly sliced
- 1/4 cup white/red/chinese wine, optional
- 1 cup chicken broth/chicken bouillon in water
- 1/2 cup lemon/orange/apple/etc juice
- 1 to 2 tablespoons butter

Directions
- Season chicken with thyme and salt and pepper
- Heat a large saute pan over medium heat and add the oil
- Dredge the chicken in flour, add to the hot oil and saute until cooked through
- Set chicken aside

- In same saute pan, over low heat, add onions and thyme and cook until aromatic
- Add wine (if using) and broth, and add the lemon juice
- Turn the heat up to high, and deglaze the pan with the broth mixture until starting to reduce
- Remove the pan from the heat and finish the sauce by adding butter
- Season with salt and pepper, to taste
- Add chicken back into pan and saute for a few minutes or add some corn flour to sauce to thicken, then pour over chicken

Tasted great! I think...;)
